Following the adoption of the Association’s new constitution in February, 2005, corporate organisations, other than banks and discount houses as well as individuals can now attain membership status of the Association.
Initial membership in 1990 was 107 banks but the consolidation of the financial services industry has brought this number down significantly. Currently the membership is 39, made up of 25 banks, 5 discount houses, 7 non-bank financial institutions and 2 corporate organisations.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC) and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement Systems (NIBSS) have observer status. Additionally, nine individuals who have contributed significantly to the growth of the Association have been conferred with Honourary Membership.
Corporate membership is open to all corporations cutting across sectorial lines viz: Banking and Finance, Non-bank financial institutions (who are involved in the Naira, foreign exchange and or Government securities trading ) as well as multinationals with minimum turn-over of N10billion.
